Information on GPRS networks
The information on this page has been supplied mainly by users of my Apple GPRS scripts, though one or two network providers have supplied data (officially or through an employee). It may be subject to change; if you find any inaccuracies, or know of any other network details, please let me know through the form at the end of the page.
I do not have SMTP server details for many networks - if you cannot find out the SMTP server name for your network, you will be unable to send any email unless you use an external SMTP service - see Note 6 at the bottom of the table.

General warning: if you get connected, but no traffic seems to flow, try turning off TCP header compression (Remote Access:Options:Protocol in OS 9, Preferences:PPP:PPP Options in OS X). Many GPRS networks do not support this feature.

Warning for OS X: one of OS X's default settings causes problems with many GPRS networks. If you get disconnections after only a few seconds, turn off "Send PPP echo packets" in System Preferences:Network:PPP:PPP Options.

[supplied] = Details will be supplied to each user by their network provider
[mobile number] = your mobile phone number
[Note 1] = TCP Header Compression is supported
[Note 2] = Cingular can support a compression system, which may not work with many Mac browsers or mail clients. Try the compression version, since it will give improved throughput if it works, but switch to the non-compressed username if you have problems.
Cingular's WAP APN does not support compression, and only allows 2 MB to be transferred before disconnecting you.
[Note 3] = (not used)
[Note 4] = Fido's Accelerator Proxy is: rapido.fido.ca:8080
You can disable or modify the accelerator, which may not work on Macs or with all browsers, by browsing to rapido.fido.ca while on GPRS (remove the proxy settings first, if you're having problems)
[Note 5] = Pannon allows both its contract and pre-pay customers to pay a flat fee for a certain amount of GPRS usage - those users can access the netx APN. Contract and pre-pay users who do not take out this subscription can only access the net APN, where they are charged per kByte.
[Note 6] = The network has no SMTP server. You need to use a third-party service which allows authenticated SMTP access using username/password. There are commercial services such as .Mac for Mac users, or SMTP.com, or free services such as gmx.net (in German).
[Note 7] = For LMT, the proxy (www, wais, gopher, ftp) is: proxy.lmt.lv:8080
To activate GPRS service, you need to send an SMS with the text "G" or "GPRS" to 9319988. Service will be activated within 1 hour, and automatically canceled within a month.

Please check that you have correctly entered your email address before pressing the Send button - I get at least two messages a week that I can't respond to.

Also note: my ISP's servers are sometimes very slow in processing mail forms. They can take up to 3 minutes to respond - if you're using Safari, it will time out after 60 seconds. If you don't appear to get a response, don't worry, the message will still get through.
